AlgorithmWatch is a human rights organization based in Berlin and Zurich that focuses on the societal impact of algorithmic decision-making systems (ADM) and artificial intelligence (AI). We are committed to ensuring that such systems strengthen human rights, democracy, the rule of law and sustainability. We contribute to this with political campaigns, advocacy work, journalistic research, research and technology development.

Your future position

As the climate crisis accelerates, Artificial Intelligence poses a growing threat to a livable planet. 

Reporting to the Head of Policy, you will design and implement strategic advocacy activities that tackle harmful industry practices, lobby policymakers, and mobilize public support for better AI governance. Collaborating with researchers, activists, and decision-makers, you will translate complex environmental and socio-economic insights into compelling advocacy initiatives. You will follow the latest interdisciplinary knowledge for understanding how AI and sustainability relate to political and social issues, coordinate the transfer of research on the topic into practice, and identify actionable ideas for change. Your work will shape narratives, build coalitions, push for policies that challenge AI’s unchecked expansion, and help develop a vision for alternative futures which respect sustainability and justice.

We’re looking for a passionate, strategic communicator with experience in climate justice, environmental and/or technology policy, or corporate accountability with a strong analytical approach to complex, intersectional challenges and excellent research skills.

This is an opportunity to influence global discussions on AI and climate, working alongside a passionate team committed to evidence-based advocacy and systemic change.

As a Senior Advocacy Manager at AlgorithmWatch, you

  • design and implement strategic advocacy activities (e.g. campaigns, policy proposals, communications) that have a positive impact on policymaking, public attitudes, and AI producers;
  • lead on identifying, building, and getting results from collaborations with other organizations;
  • collaborate with AlgorithmWatch’s Tech Research Team to build on high-quality research within AlgorithmWatch and with academic and CSO partners;
  • collaborate with the Communications & Campaigns Team to translate complex findings into engaging content for AlgorithmWatch’s audiences;
  • monitor and evaluate advocacy results in order to increase impact;
  • represent AlgorithmWatch in meetings with partner organizations, politicians, high-ranking civil servants, companies and journalists.

What we expect from you:

  • several years of experience in advocacy work or in government, parliament, public policy, campaigning or communication;
  • a proven track record of putting a theory of change into practice;
  • initiative, drive, and creativity when it comes to designing and implementing advocacy strategies;
  • a professional yet tenacious approach, confidently holding decision-makers accountable while working diplomatically to drive progress;
  • the ability to deal with multi-faceted contexts and set priorities;
  • a concise and motivating writing style in German and English that you can apply to different audiences;
  • some familiarity with the current debates about Artificial Intelligence and climate justice;
  • critical political judgment and the ability to think one step ahead;
  • team spirit and first experience in leadership;
  • willingness to travel in Germany or Europe (e.g. to Brussels).
